Well sometimes I am not the sharpest tool in the shed. And this story is going to prove that🥴 Late one night, as I was driving home, a sight caught my attention—a woman was walking quickly along a busy road, looking a little lost and disoriented. I felt a little worried about her and thought I should probably see if she needed help. I said a little prayer in my mind and asked if that was a safe thing for me to do. I felt a sense of calm so I whipped the car around and pulled up next to her, and what I soon experienced was an unexpected and eye-opening encounter.
It was getting dark, so initially I couldn't see her face real well or what she was wearing. I asked her if she needed a ride and without hesitation, she accepted and climbed into the car. Now her appearance became clearer—"oh dear" I thought😬, "I might have just picked up a prostitute, now what do I do?!" She was already sitting in my car. Most of her teeth were missing and she looked as though she'd had a decade or two with some drug use. She had on a very short mini skirt, high healed boots and a tiny tank top. She stuttered and muttered at first when she shut the door and looked at me and smiled with her missing teeth. Now my mind was racing!!"oh crap, how do I get out of this!" and "what was I thinking?!!, she's not even coherent!" She started to make a little more sense although it was hard to understand her. She asked "Where am I?" I said, "In Beaumont" She said "oh, can you take me to Hemet?" which is about a 35 minute drive from where we were. Realizing I probably couldn't get her out of the car now that she was in there, her and I drove off into the night towards Hemet. Not too long after we started driving, I felt a calmness. We began chatting on the drive and her story began to unfold. I asked what she was doing up in Beaumont and she told me that she worked the streets and somehow ended up there. I kinda already figured that. She asked me if I was a Mormon😄. I giggled because I am a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, which Mormon is a nickname for our church. I said "What the heck! Yes! Golly Gosh Darn, how did you know!?" Apparently its not too hard to spot us out:))🙂 I didn't actually say the Golly gosh darn part but I wanted to add that in there. She said "it's usually the Mormons that stop to help." That was a Compliment I think.
She continued on telling me that she hadn't always been this way. It made me sad because I could tell that she was trying so hard to act and talk normal but it was clear that she was currently on some kind of drug or just had permanent damage from previous drug use. She told me that she held a master's degree and had once been very well-educated. You know, I believer her. It's as though there was a fragment of the women she really was hidden in there, but all that had been taken away. I wish I could have learned more about her story and how it all played out but our ride came to an end. She gave me a hug and thanked me and got out at a gas station somewhere in Hemet and disappeared into the night.
I vowed to never tell my husband what I had just done because I was sure he would take my car away for picking up a stranger and driving them to a wild neighborhood pretty far from home😄 but I was glad that I did pick her up. She was a kind woman, and had a surprising background. Eye opening for me. I'm learning not to judge people and instead just love. Although I probably wont be picking people up on the street any more, I learned a lot from this experience.
Each person carries a story, and not always one you'd expect and also, DON"T DO DRUGS.
End note: Remember, sometimes it's the unplanned detours that lead to the most enlightening destinations. Embrace the unexpected with an open heart, for within those moments lie the true essence of human connection.
Cheers!
